National Symposium on Organ Donation & Transplantation

Building trust. Advancing donation. Shaping the future.

Clinical leaders, people with lived experience, policymakers, faith and community representatives, funders and international experts, in one room for one day. The work: strengthen ethical living donation now, and lay responsible foundations for deceased donation.

Organ failure touches families. Access to transplantation remains uneven. Progress requires trust.

Transplantation is a system, not a procedure. It rests on informed choice, donor safety, capable institutions, fair access and public confidence. Nigeria has the expertise and the beginnings of policy. What is missing is the connection between them, and the voices of patients, donors and communities in the room where it is decided.

We begin with Nigerian experience. We learn from the world. We leave with priorities we can act on.

Why now

Standards and oversight for transplantation have moved forward. Capacity, access, consent, donor follow-up and public trust have not kept pace. This symposium puts those questions in front of the people who can act on them.

Priority one

Ethical living donation

Protect donors, strengthen education and follow-up, and build confidence in the care pathways that already exist.

Priority two

Public trust

Engage faith leaders, families and communities on their own terms, including the hard questions about consent and exploitation.

Priority three

Future readiness

Establish the legal, clinical, institutional and ethical safeguards that must precede any expansion of deceased donation.

    Independently convened. Collaboratively informed.

The Ibrahim Impact Foundation convenes the symposium and serves as its secretariat: coordination, fundraising, transparent reporting and follow-through. Clinical, ethical and policy advisers guide the programme as participants are confirmed.

Organizations and guests are named only once permission is given and attendance confirmed.

Measured by what happens after the conversation.

No convening settles a national question in a day. This one commits to a short list of workable priorities, the people willing to carry them, and a published record of what follows.

    On 20 July

A shared record of the strongest ideas and up to three emerging action priorities.

    Within 30 days

Publish a symposium summary and invite interested stakeholders into an opt-in follow-up network.

    Within 90 days

Convene working discussions and develop the scope of a living-donation education and patient-support pilot.

    Within 12 months

Report progress, evaluate a potential pilot and continue technical dialogue on long-term deceased-donation readiness.
